Kılıç Lab/Neurobiological and Neurodegenerative Disease Research Group

The KILIC laboratory investigates neurodegenerative diseases’ molecular mechanisms, including focal cerebral ischemia, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury. In addition, KILIC group also conducts research on recombinant protein production, microchimerism, and circadian rhythm.

We are currently focusing on the four topics i) role of circadian rhythm on focal cerebral ischemia in mice, ii) optogenetic or chemogenetic neuromodulation to treat cerebral ischemia, iii) recombinant protein production, purification, and use in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, iv) Lentivirus- or AAV-mediated gene therapy on focal cerebral ischemia.

Research Overview

Research Approach

While stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide, there are few options to treat patients who have had a stroke. The lack of treatment options has led the researchers to concentrate on identifying and validating potential targets for the development of treatment strategies. Even though studying stroke pathophysiology, the main goal of the KILIC Lab is underlying the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, especially cell death and neurological deficits. Various animal models have been used to study not only the pathophysiological events including apoptotic cell death but also neuroplasticity after cerebral ischemia, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury. The KILIC Lab combines diverse techniques and experimental approaches to ask and answer fundamental scientific questions in neuroscience.

The research approach of our group consists in studying the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases in order to integrate in vivo and in vitro laboratory techniques in translational neuroscience.
