Workshop / EEG/fNIRS Workshop In Neuroscience Research

Studies that combine functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) with electroencephalography (EEG) techniques have become increasingly common during the past ten years. More thorough information upon several elements of cortical activity can be obtained by combining the high spatial resolution hemodynamic data provided by fNIRS with the high temporal resolution electrophysiological data provided by EEG.

This workshop will feature multiple presentations on fundamentals of EEG-fNIRS combined neuroimaging, study designs, joint analysis of EEG-fNIRS data, potential advanced data processing approaches, and interpretation of findings. The challenges associated with merging the analysis of EEG and fNIRS data will also be discussed at a roundtable discussion with our academics and faculties.

The goal of the workshop is to bring together neuroimaging researchers, graduate students (at master’s and doctorate levels), and/or clinical professionals who are interested in method development and clinical applications.

Date: Sunday, July 3

Time: 11.30 – 16.00

Venue: Istanbul Medipol University Halic Campus

Speakers: Prof. Dr. Lütfü Hanoğlu, Dr. Ahmet Omurtag, Dr. Meryem Yücel, Prof. Dr. Zübeyir Bayraktaroğlu, Prof. Dr. Bahar Güntekin, Dr. Sinem Burcu Erdoğan, Dr. Hasan Onur Keleş, Dr. Erol Yıldırım

*The program will be carried out in a hybrid way.

*The round table discussion session will be attended by invitation and will be held face-to-face.

Ahmet Omurtag

Dr. Ahmet Omurtag

Nottingham Trent University, United Kingdom

Dr. Ahmet Omurtag is a senior lecturer in Biomedical Engineering at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom. He graduated from Engineering the University of Missouri. He has a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Columbia University and in neuroscience at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. His research areas are electroencephalography, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy neuroimaging techniques, clinical and daily joint usage of neuroimaging techniques.

Training in the joint usage and data analysis of functional near-infrared spectroscopy and electroencephalography

Ahmet Omurtag, a multimodal functional neuroimaging researcher and senior lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, is an expert in electroencephalography (EEG), functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), and signal analysis. For the past ten years, EEG and fNIRS techniques have been utilized in conjunction to acquire the multidimensional data that is necessary to better understand diagnosis, treatment, and brain functions. Dr. Omurtag will deliver lectures on using and analyzing EEG and fNIRS data during this workshop.

More thorough information upon several elements of cortical activity can be obtained by combining the high spatial resolution hemodynamic data provided by fNIRS with the high temporal resolution electrophysiological data provided by EEG. The workshop by Dr. Omurtag will feature fundamentals of EEG-fNIRS combined neuroimaging, study designs, joint analysis of EEG-fNIRS data, potential advanced data processing approaches, and interpretation of findings. Students with EEG and fNIRS datasets will present their work after the theoretical lectures, and analysis algorithms will be run on the collected data.

The target audience of the training: Neuroimaging researchers and students (at the graduate and doctoral level) and/or clinical professionals interested in clinical practice with method development.

The training will be held at Istanbul Medipol University Halic Campus between 4 and 15 July.

* The training invitation procedure will be provided with participation and will be carried out face to face.

Dr. Ayşe Meryem Yücel

Boston University, USA

Dr. Ayşe Meryem Yücel graduated with honors from the Department of Chemical Engineering at Boğaziçi University. Dr. Yücel has a master’s degree and a doctorate in Biomedical engineering from Boğaziçi University. She is a researcher in the field of biomedical engineering at Boston University. Research areas, electroencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging, clinical and daily use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy neuroimaging techniques, advanced analysis of functional near-infrared spectroscopy neuroimaging data, and cognitive neuroimaging are cognitive neuroscience.

Training on Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Data Analysis and Interpretation with the Homer 3 Program

The developer of the Homer 3 program, Meryem Yücel from Boston University, will teach participants how to use the program to analyze and interpret data from functional near-infrared spectroscopy. The workshop by Dr. Yücel will feature fundamentals of EEG-fNIRS combined neuroimaging, study designs, joint analysis of EEG-fNIRS data, potential advanced data processing approaches, and interpretation of findings. Students with EEG and fNIRS datasets will present their work after the theoretical lectures, and analysis algorithms will be run on the collected data.

The goal of the training is to teach both the fundamental and advanced analyses of EEG-fNIRS data as well as the advanced analysis of fNIRS data using the Homer 3 program.

The target audience of the training: Neuroimaging researchers and students (at the graduate and doctoral level) and/or clinical professionals interested in clinical practice with method development.

The training will be held at Istanbul Medipol University Halic Campus between 18 – 29 July.

* The training invitation procedure will be provided with participation and will be carried out face to face.

The ‘Training in the joint usage and data analysis of functional near-infrared spectroscopy and electroencephalography’ and ’Training on Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Data Analysis and Interpretation with the Homer 3 Program’ training programs are carried out with the support of TÜBİTAK 2221- Fellowships for Visiting Scientists and Scientists on Sabbatical Leave.
