Prof. Dr. S. Sibel Erdem
[email protected]S. Sibel Erdem earned her Ph.D. in Bioorganic/Biochemistry from Louisiana State University, where she developed fluorescence-based assays to study genetic mutations and evaluate the effects of therapeutic compounds on biological targets. Her work combined chemistry and molecular biology to create innovative analytical tools for understanding disease mechanisms at the molecular level.
In 2009, she joined Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital as a postdoctoral research fellow. During this time, she conducted multidisciplinary research across two major centers. At the Center for Systems Biology, she developed light-activated drug delivery systems for the detection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases using photodynamic therapy. Later, at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine, she focused on engineering fluorescent probes for point-of-care diagnostics to rapidly detect antibiotic resistance, as well as designing activatable immunoconjugates for targeted photodynamic therapy and real-time monitoring of cancer micrometastases.
Dr. Erdem is currently a faculty member in the Department of Medical Biochemistry at the International School of Medicine. Her research bridges chemistry, nanotechnology, and medicine to create advanced tools for diagnosis and therapy. Her current work focuses on developing targeted therapeutics and nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems, photodynamic therapy applications, creating biomarker-responsive fluorescent probes, and designing light-activated molecules for precision medical applications.
