AI and mobile health diagnostics in IVF

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming reproductive medicine, creating new opportunities to improve the accuracy, efficiency, and accessibility of IVF. In this presentation, Dr. Hadi Shafiee will discuss recent advances from his laboratory at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in developing AI-enabled technologies for fertility care. The talk will focus on a novel AI-guided microwell platform designed to detect and retrieve extremely rare sperm cells from microTESE specimens that have been deemed sperm-negative after exhaustive manual search. By combining automated microscopy, deep learning, and coordinate-mapped sperm retrieval, this technology has the potential to recover viable sperm that would otherwise be missed, offering new hope for men with non-obstructive azoospermia. Dr. Shafiee will also highlight the broader role of AI in digitizing IVF workflows and discuss how intelligent diagnostic platforms may reshape the future of precision reproductive medicine.

Dr. Hadi Shafiee is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a Principal Investigator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. His research program operates at the convergence of microfluidics, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence, with a mission to develop transformative diagnostic tools for precision medicine. A core focus of his laboratory is engineering advanced point-of-care and digital health platforms that leverage machine learning and optical sensing to deliver clinical-grade testing directly to the point of need.

As a biotechnology entrepreneur and innovator, Dr. Shafiee is at the forefront of digitizing reproductive medicine. Through his academic laboratory and as the co-founder of Verility Inc. and Seedboxlabs Inc., he develops AI-enabled point-of-care diagnostics and foundational AI frameworks that span the entire fertility continuum. By seamlessly connecting at-home consumer screening tools with advanced clinical decision-support systems, his digital health diagnostic platforms bring unprecedented precision and objectivity to the in-vitro fertilization (IVF) journey. His technologies automate complex laboratory workflows and digitize the human embryo/sperm, transforming the subjective art of reproductive care into a highly optimized, data-driven science.

Dr. Shafiee’s technologies are supported by institutional and national awards including National Institute of Health and are actively commercialized through exclusive licensing agreements with global industry partners. He holds over 20 issued or pending patents. His breakthroughs have been published in top-tier journals, including Nature Biomedical Engineering, The Lancet, Science Translational Medicine, Nature Communications, Human Reproduction, Fertility and Sterility. and his work on democratizing diagnostics has been highlighted by major media outlets such as CNN, The New York Times, and The Guardian.
