Targeting most aggressive cancers with first-in-class or best-in-class inhibitors

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide. It is a highly heterogeneous disease, and clinically classified into three subtypes: estrogen receptor-positive (ER+), HER2-positive (HER2+) and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Depending on the subtype, breast cancer patients can be treated with different targeted therapy and chemotherapy agents. However, a large fraction of patients exhibits disease recurrence and metastasis, greatly reducing the clinical outcome. Our main goal has been to identify druggable targets and molecules to inhibit disease progression in the most aggressive breast cancers by combining functional genomics, cell biology, and medicinal chemistry approaches

Özgür Şahin is a Professor and SmartState Endowed Chair in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). He also serves as the Program Director for Basic Science Translation and as a Co-Leader of the Breast Cancer Program at MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. His laboratory focuses on elucidating the molecular mechanisms of cancer therapeutics, drug resistance, and metastasis, primarily in breast cancer, with the ultimate goal of translating these findings into clinical applications.

His research has been continuously supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Cancer Society, the Department of Defense (DoD), the Mary Kay Foundation, industry partners, and the state endowment at MUSC. He has extensive expertise in cancer cell biology, functional genomics, and translational research.

His laboratory conducts interdisciplinary research by integrating expertise in cancer cell biology, high-throughput functional transcriptomics/proteomics, and drug discovery with contributions from experts in medicinal chemistry, bioinformatics, and medical oncology to target the most aggressive cancers.
