SABITALKS / Manipulations in Mammalian Embryos, Generating Transgenic Mice and Cryopreservation

Dr. Tolga Akkoç

He was born in Istanbul in 1979. He graduated from Uludağ University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Science in 2004. In the same year, he started working as a researcher at TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Institute, Transgenic and Laboratory Animals Laboratory. He began his master’s degree at Trakya University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Science, Department of Biometry and Genetics, and completed his master’s thesis titled “In vitro culture and cryopreservation of rat embryos” in 2006. In the same year, he began his PhD at Namık Kemal University, Tekirdağ Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Animal Science, Department of Biometry and Genetics, and completed his doctoral thesis on “IVF and cryopreservation of embryos in cows.”
He has performed studies in transgenic animal production, cloning, IVF, biopsy in embryos, production of sex-determined embryos, somatic and stem cell culture, cryopreservation of gametes, tissues, organs, and embryos, and biocompatibility and toxicity.
In 2018, he worked at Boston Children’s Hospital affiliated with Harvard University on airway-induced asthma modeling in mice and performed microsurgical procedures.
He has 42 international publications and 72 papers presented at national and international congresses.
He received a poster award for the study titled Expression of Human Gamma Interferon Secretion at the 2nd Mediterranean Clinical Immunology Meeting congress.

• “Therapeutic Effect of Rat Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells on Immunological Parameters in a Hepatofibrosis Model Induced by Bile Duct Ligation” Second Prize for Oral Presentation. 32nd National Gastroenterology Week. 2015
• “Cloning of Anatolian Native Cattle” Project, Category B Achievement Award 2009. – TÜBİTAK MAM – 2010
• “Secretion of Human Gamma Interferon in the Mammary Glands of Transgenic Mice” Project, Category B Achievement Award 2009. – TÜBİTAK MAM – 2010

He has provided training in Applied Techniques Used in Assisted Reproductive Technologies and Transgenic Animal Production, Applied Embryonic Stem Cell Culture Training, Applied Embryo Production and Nuclear Transfer in Mammals, and Medical Device Biocompatibility.”
He started working as a researcher in the Biotechnology R&D Group under the Life Sciences Vice Presidency Unit at TÜBİTAK MAM in 2004 and left his position in 2025 as a Senior Expert Researcher.
