Birnur Sinem Karaoğlan
B. Sinem Karaoğlan is currently a third year Medicine-Psychology double major student at İstanbul Medipol University. She graduated from Ankara High School of Science with the honour roll in 2018. Upon enrolling to the medical school she went to Boston, MA for language school with the help of merit-based scholarship from Medipol University.While she was in high school, she took graduate-level biology lectures and worked at Molecular Biology Laboratory, Gazi University along with Prof. Dr. Leyla Açık. She received bronze and silver medals in the Tubitak National Biology Olympiads in 2016 and 2018, respectively. In 2017, she ranked 35th at International Biology competition, University of Toronto. In 2018 29th IBO, she ranked 2nd among the 288 participants from 72 different countries in Molecular Biology Task and got a bronze medal. This process led her to acquire theoretical and practical competency of a graduate student even before she finished the high school. She is still teaching microbiology at TUBITAK camps and mentoring in International Biology Olympiads.
She has been an intern at Cancer Centre, Institute of Health Sciences and Technologies for three years. She is working on potential glioblastoma biomarkers and gene-editing based stem cell therapies.
