Small Swimming Things: From Control of Helical Microrobots to Dispersion of Swimming Microorganisms

In this talk, the speaker will demonstrate how research on artificial and biological microswimmers converges to enable biomedical applications. The speaker will first introduce the non-intuitive physics of swimming at small scales. The speaker will then present navigation strategies for microrobots in this regime. These robots hold great potential for applications such as targeted drug delivery and non-invasive surgery. Finally, the speaker will discuss the collective dynamics of biological swimmers, showing how their unique dispersion mechanisms can be exploited for applications such as cell sorting and inhibiting biofilm formation.

Dr. Hakan Osman Çaldağ is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Istanbul Medipol University. He obtained his PhD in Mechatronics Engineering from Sabanci University, investigating the swimming of helical microrobots. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Mathematics at the University of York. There he investigated the transport phenomena of swimming microorganisms with biased motility. His research integrates both theoretical and experimental approaches to develop biomedical applications involving swimmers at small scales.
