Interplay Between Phosphatidylinositol-3,5-Bisphosphate and Mitosis

Phosphatidylinositol-3,5-bisphosphate (PI3,5P2) is an endo-lysosomal signaling lipid synthesized through phosphorylation of Phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate (PI3P) by the PIKfyve/Fab1-complex. Importance of PI3,5P2 is highlighted by lethality of mice and yeast lacking PIKfyve/Fab1, as well as mutations of PIKfyve/Fab1-complex proteins associated with several human diseases. PI3,5P2 plays crucial roles in various cellular processes including stress response, membrane trafficking, lysosome structure/function and transcriptional regulation. In addition, recent studies from my lab and previous studies identified roles for PI3,5P2 in the cell cycle control. Here, I will talk about the interplay between mitosis and PI3,5P2. First, I will summarize findings of our recently published paper on how PI3,5P2 function is crucial for a timely mitotic exit. Then, I will present our unpublished data on how PI3,5P2 synthesis is modulated during the cell cycle and discuss its functional significance.

Ayşe Koca Çaydaşı earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Middle East Technical University in 2004. She then pursued her doctoral studies at the University of Heidelberg, obtaining her Ph.D. in 2010. Subsequently, she carried out postdoctoral research at the German Cancer Research Centre until July 2016. In July 2017 she joined the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Koç University as a faculty member. Her research interests lie in spatial and temporal coordination of cell cycle events using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker’s yeast) as a model system.
