Epigenetics is the study of phenotypic changes resulting from the over- or under-expression of genes without any alterations in the DNA sequence. It also examines the disorders that might occur when environmental factors such as lifestyle, nutrition habits and sports alter the expression of genes. It is epigenetics that determines when and how our genes will work. With the concept of epigenetics, we currently know that even if we have a genetic predisposition to many diseases, we might not get that disease because the relevant genes may not be activated because of certain epigenetic mechanisms.
Therefore, the increase in the number of epigenetic-related diseases such as non-communicable inflammation, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, dementia and Alzheimer’s in recent years has led scientists to the field of epigenetics and to use these biomarkers for the early diagnosis of these epigenetic diseases. Currently scientists have more interest in this subject due to the reversibility of epigenetic changes.
Assist. Prof. Elif Sibel Aslan is graduated from Erciyes University, Department of Biology. She did her Master’s degree in Applied-Microbiology at the University of Westminster, London/UK, and completed her doctorate at the London Metropolitan University, London/UK. During her doctorate, she studied iron deficiency anemia and given lectures in this university. Having been a faculty member at Istanbul Biruni University since 2014 (still continuing), Dr. Aslan served as Head of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Head of the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics Master’s and Doctorate Programs as well. She still continues her post-doctoral projects research studies with international connections. She has participated in many congress and published many articles in that field. She is married and has twin daughters.
